Student-Athletes and Parents/Guardians Handbook
Iowa School for the Deaf has a strong athletic tradition! Current sports offerings are cheerleading, cross country, volleyball, basketball, track and Special Olympics. We compete against junior varsity teams or private schools in the local area, but the competition heats up when we play against other schools for the deaf.
Sports Conference
Iowa School for the Deaf is in a school conference called the Great Plains Schools for the Deaf (GPSD), of which some 10 schools regularly participate. These sporting events require travel, and often, overnight stays. This creates fierce competitors on the field but also leads to fast friendships before and after the games.
ISD Mascot
Bobcat (/bäbˌkat/) n
Fierce mammal with fire in its eyes and fight in its game. Gives 100 percent on the field or court. The mascot name was chosen by the students in 1932 because bobcats are “scrappy, always ready to fight hard and fight to the end.”
