Science Center of Iowa

What does it take to produce a weather report? Iowa students who are deaf or hard of hearing will use teamwork and their sense of curiosity to find out at Saying & Signing Symposium (S3) on Wednesday, April 24 at the Science Center of Iowa in Des Moines.
Interpreters and deaf educators will collaborate with science center staff to offer students full access to STEM activities. Kindergarteners through eighth grade students will learn about potential careers and enjoy interacting with one another as they explore engineering, architecture, coding, robotics and other STEM themes.
Students will be grouped according to grade level, according to Taryn Peterson, a member of the Iowa School for the Deaf Outreach team, which is hosting the event.
According to Peterson, exploring technology and future careers shows students what could be possible when they explore technology and future careers, “especially within the concept of making everyday things more accessible for people who are deaf, hard-of-hearing or deafblind individuals,” she stated.
