Iowa School for the Deaf and Iowa Educational Services for the Blind & Visually Impaired narrow superintendent search to two finalists

Rayburn Boland and Christopher Kaftan will move on for final consideration.

The superintendent search committee for the Iowa Educational Services for the Blind & Visually Impaired (IESBVI) and Iowa School for the Deaf (ISD) has named two finalists to lead the school and program as superintendent. Rayburn Boland, currently the secondary principal at Arkansas School for the Deaf in Little Rock, Ark. and Christopher Kaftan, director of student services at The Learning Center for the Deaf in Framingham, Mass. are advancing for final consideration.

Rayburn Boland has collaborated with the Arkansas deafblind community, Children and Youth with Sensory Impairments and Additional Disabilities, Educational Services for the Visually Impaired, and Arkansas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired to provide support deafblind students with braille, orientation and mobility training. Christopher Kaftan taught students with visual impairments and coordinated services with school districts to ensure blind and visually impaired students’ needs were met inside and outside the classroom.

The superintendent search committee members are united in their commitment to ensure the next superintendent is dedicated to advancing education for deaf, hard of hearing, blind, visually impaired and deafblind students. The 11-member committee includes a representative group of parents, faculty, staff, alumni and organizations, including the Iowa Department for the Blind and the Iowa Association of the Deaf.

Community members are invited to meet the finalists at a candidate forum on Monday, April 29 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. CST at the Lied Multipurpose Complex at the Iowa School for the Deaf, 3501 Harry Langdon Blvd., Council Bluffs.
